Breakthrough Solar Cell Technology @ MIT

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are currently developing what could be the future of solar energy.

Traditional solar cells only absorb a specific range of the light spectrum. For this reason most solar cells on the market have a maximum efficiency of 30%. Much of the energy from sunlight is lost, while only a small range of the entire spectrum is captured and ultimately turned into electricity.

This year’s Solar Power International Convention was much smaller than previous years. We can probably contribute this to the gloom around renewable energy legislation. Donald Trump and his administration aren’t doing the solar industry any favors at the moment.

Legislation across the US on the state, city, and county levels are passing renewable energy mandates that will completely remove these communities off fossil fuel dependency.  To date, a total of 25 US cities have committed to producing 100% of its energy from renewables sources. These sources primarily consist of hydroelectric, solar, and wind.
